Chemical Process Simulation Software / Oil and Gas Process Simulation Software is used to simulate various processes relating to production, processing and use of multi-component hydrocarbon / oil and natural gas mixtures by calculating various multi-component vapor liquid equilibrium (VLE) properties of hydrocarbon / oil and natural gas mixtures. In oil refineries, NGL recovery plants and other hydrocarbon processing plants, the process does not involves any reaction but it involves separation of hydrocarbon mixtures into various pure hydrocarbons or smaller collection of hydrocarbons. Even in chemical processing plants like petrochemical plants where reaction of hydrocarbons to form polymers or other hydrocarbon compounds is taking place, hydrocarbons required for reaction are seldom available in pure form requiring an initial step of separation of these hydrocarbons from the provided hydrocarbon mixture.

This separation of hydrocarbon mixture into pure hydrocarbons or smaller collection of hydrocarbons is based on difference in volatilities of the separated hydrocarbons or hydrocarbon mixtures. For mixtures of nonpolar or mildly polar hydrocarbons and inorganic gases like crude oil and natural gas, equation of states (EoS) like Peng Robinson cubic equation of state, Soave Redlich Kwong cubic equation of state and its variants are widely used for simulating volatility and other vapor liquid equilibrium (VLE) properties. Equation of states (EoS) can simulate both liquid and vapor phase properties of nonpolar or mildly polar hydrocarbons and inorganic gases and their mixtures requiring minimum number of parameters like critical pressure, critical temperature, critical volume, molecular weight and acentric factor and not requiring separate equations and parameters for liquid and vapor phase. Peng Robinson cubic equation of state is the preferred equation used for simulating various vapor liquid equilibrium (VLE) properties like bubble point, hydrocarbon dew point, phase envelope, compressibility factor, two phase compositions, hydrate phase equilibrium curve, binary VLE curves like McCabe Thiele diagram and Ponchon Savarit diagram, multicomponent distillation column design calculations, CO2 frost and freezing curve and thermodynamic properties like enthalpy, entropy, Gibbs free energy, specific heats, sonic speed, isobaric thermal expansivity and joule thomson coefficient for nonpolar or mildly polar hydrocarbons and inorganic gases and their mixtures. Also for calculations involving crude oil, pseudo components need to be included in the hydrocarbon mixture as exact composition of crude oil is not known completely.

Apart from separation of hydrocarbon mixtures, vapor liquid equilibrium (VLE) properties find usage in oil and gas reservoir simulation and designing and operations of each and every equipment handling nonpolar or mildly polar hydrocarbons and inorganic gases and their mixtures like pumps, compressors, pressure vessels and pipelines. Therefore, vapor liquid equilibrium (VLE) properties derived using preferred Peng Robinson cubic equation of state can be used to simulate various processes and unit operations relating to oil and natural gas wells and reservoirs, oil refineries, NGL recovery plants, petrochemical plants and other hydrocarbon processing plants.

Also accurate prediction of vapor liquid equilibrium (VLE) properties is required in astrochemical applications to simulate the atmospheres of various heavenly bodies which are composed of different hydrocarbons and inorganic gases at different temperatures and pressures.
