GAS HYDRATE BASED WATER TREATMENT TECHNOLOGY
Treatment of highly polluted water containing variety of dissolved solids and miscible liquids coming out of various chemical/ oil and gas establishments like fracking wells is very challenging. Reverse osmosis based technologies can be used for removal of dissolved solids but are not technically feasible beyond a small concentration of dissolved solids in polluted water. Also reverse osmosis based technologies cannot be used for treatment of highly polluted water because of fouling of expensive reverse osmosis membrane by the pollutants. Distillation based technologies exist for removing dissolved solids but these technologies are very expensive both in infrastructure as well as operationally. Also same infrastructure cannot be used to remove miscible liquids from this highly polluted water. Removal of miscible liquids from water using distillation based technologies require setting up of cascade of tall distillation columns which is very expensive both in infrastructure and operationally. Other thermal technologies like freezing are found to be practically infeasible due to requirement of extreme low temperatures and difficulty in separation of ice from the brine slurry.
A new gas hydrate based water treatment technology has been developed specifically for treatment of highly polluted water containing variety of dissolved solids and miscible liquids. This technology is capable of producing reasonably pure water out of this highly polluted water containing variety of dissolved solids and miscible liquids at a fraction of cost than that required for distillation based technologies. Also as gas hydrates can be formed at much higher temperature than freezing temperature of brine and as formation of gas hydrates can be controlled by controlling the input of hydrate former gas so unlike freezing based water treatment technologie, this gas hydrate based water treatment technology is very much feasible techno-economically. The present gas hydrate based water treatment technology carries out formation of gas hydrates, separation of gas hydrates from concentrated brine, washing of gas hydrates and dissociation of gas hydrates in the same vessel thus resulting in very low infrastructure cost. Also an innovative heat pump based refrigeration system is suggested in the technology where two desalination systems are operated out-of-phase and heat is transferred from the desalination system in hydrate formation phase to the desalination system in hydrate dissociation phase using a heat pump base refrigeration system requiring very less energy and operating cost. Various other innovation are also included in this gas hydrate based water treatment technology which makes this technology probably the cheapest gas hydrate based water treatment technology possible.
A US patent number 9643860 B2 has been granted to the technology and an Indian patent for the technology is pending. Companies interested in licensing the technology are being sought.
